Plus size vintage

They don't make things like they used to, or at least that's how I feel about clothing. I love vintage clothing, dresses especially, because I feel like they fit and drape the body in a more flattering way than modern ones. They are usually created with sturdier fabrics and well-sewn, and dresses are  LONGER. (My long-legged comrades, rejoice!)

Unfortunately for we ladies who wear a modern size 10 and up, who are large busted, or are above average height, the choices for flattering vintage clothing can be skimpy. I'm 5'10" and wear a modern size 11/13. I cannot count the number of times I got my hopes up about a beautiful size 12 or 14 vintage dress, only for it to get it stuck on my shoulders, hips, or bust.

But, for every few disappointments there is that one find that makes the hunt worthwhile! Hopefully everyone can find "that one" here are Parsimony Jane.

As my business grows I am making a concentrated effort to stock items that can fit a variety of sizes and shapes. Stretchy waist dresses, shift dresses and blouses that can be belted, and longer length dresses are a great place to start if you're plus size and new to vintage.

My advice is to learn your body! Take measurements (charts and instructions in the Style & Size and Quality & Fit pages), experiment, and just try, try, try! Over time I've started ignoring tags altogether; I've literally rocked a Forever 21 size small tutu skirt one day, and a size 16 tea length vintage dress the next, and a size 8 80s secretary dress the next. NUMBERS MEAN NOTHING!

Lastly, find a good tailor. Fun fact: most vintage clothes were designed to be altered later such as wider hems to leave room for lengthening. Simple alterations such as lengthening or shortening sleeves or pants, adding or removing cuffed hems, adding gathers or darts to give shape, or removing puffy sleeves can breathe new life into a piece and make it your new favorite outfit!
